2 Types of Light

Natural Light

The most natural light source that is ultimately free is Sunlight, yet a bit hard to regulate. The amount of warmth and cool natural light in a room may differ in every location, direction, season, and time of the day.

Artificial Light

This type of lighting is often used to highlight features, add layers, create zones, style space, and improve the discerned proportions of interior space. Most residential interior spaces use warm artificial lighting since it provides a perfect welcoming effect.

Types of Interior Light

A general understanding of each interior lighting type is an effective way to create a proper lighting scheme for any interior design. Lights types and purposes may vary in their placement, brightness, and use.

General Lighting

It is the base of a lighting plan, providing even illumination throughout the entire room and lighting up space functionally and not solely for aesthetic reasons. General lighting is a simplified scheme considered vastly inadequate for creating a welcoming space, hence, it must go along with other lighting types to create layers and make great visual statements. It is practically providing light for day and night use.

Ambient Lighting

This lighting type is a great layering partner to general lighting creating a light source for function and completing the lighting of an area. It has a dimming system controlling the appropriate light intensity. Ambient lighting provides indirect and more subtle and candid lighting effects to create a dramatic result.

Task Lighting

A lighting type that is used for particular functions and areas. Task lighting is often used for working areas such as offices, and kitchens particularly for the preparation and cooking areas, reading areas, worktops, stair risers, headboards, and hallways. This light type has a more intense lighting effect compared to other types, hence, it is suggested to consider combining adequate ambient lighting to avoid eye strain.

Mood Lighting

Stimulates the mood within a space eliminating dull and empty vibes, and adding more style and function. Mood lighting effectively makes a room pleasant and inviting by creating layers of light that prevent the shadows produced by general lighting.

Accent Lighting

Accent light type is a bit similar to task lighting which plays specific functions and provides more luminance. A commonly known accent lighting type is the spotlights that highlight a particular feature in a room which often includes artworks, sculptures, and other design elements that need to be recognized as focal points of the space. Accent lighting can also function as more subtle in highlighting textures and establishing area perimeters rather than of a specific object.
